THE ESSENCE OF KOREAN HERITAGE: A CAPTIVATING JOURNEY THROUGH SONGPA SANDAE NORI MASK DANCE
Recently, the Faculty of Foreign Languages became a cultural bridge, transporting students back in time to experience Songpa Sandae Nori—one of Korea’s most vibrant traditional artistic symbols. More than just a visual feast, the performance was a soulful intersection between young language enthusiasts and world cultural heritage.

A UNESCO Heritage Site at the Heart of the Faculty
Songpa Sandae Nori is far more than a simple dance. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2022, this masked dance-drama originating from the Songpa region (Seoul) embodies the optimistic spirit and folk wisdom of the Korean people.

Under the stage lights, wooden masks depicting a full spectrum of human emotions—from majestic and ethereal to witty and satirical—truly came to life through the artists' rhythmic movements. The performance offered a vivid, intuitive glimpse into ancient Korean society.

Chapters of Emotion
The program was elegantly narrated, guiding the audience through various levels of storytelling:
-
The Dance of Freedom: Every fluid arm gesture and rhythmic step, performed to the cadence of traditional instruments, was more than mere technique. They were narrations of the yearning for happiness, justice, and profound humanity.

-
Satirical Wit: Through masterful acting, the play skillfully interwoven humorous situations that gently yet sharply critiqued ancient social injustices, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

From Textbooks to Immersive Experience
For students of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, particularly those majoring in Korean Language and Culture, this was a "special classroom" that transcended the limits of textbooks. Directly observing and feeling the pulse of traditional art helps students cultivate a multicultural mindset, enriching their understanding and passion for the language they are pursuing.

Speaking at the event, a representative of the Faculty emphasized: "We believe that language is the key that opens the door to culture. Through events like this, students do not just learn how to speak or write; they learn to deeply perceive the soul of a nation through its precious heritage values."

The performance concluded in an atmosphere of joy and admiration from faculty members and students alike. The lasting impression of the Songpa Sandae Nori masks will surely continue to inspire and ignite the passion of students on their journey to explore the world.
